The CinDer Soundbox disco has been a lot quieter lately. We used to play a lot at pubs, weddings, functions etc, but now just play for fun at smaller venues. We have done a couple of birthday bashes and a few braais at Wanderers Club, but nothing great....until the 16th June 2012!

We were asked to play at a fund raiser at Maritzburg Bowling Club. This is an annual event where other pubs and clubs around Pietermaritzburg enter teams in a fun day, social bowls competition. Teams consist of 3 bowlers, but only one experienced bowler is allowed per team. The other two must be novices. The idea is to introduce non bowlers to the game and have a lot of fun. Some teams dress up in fancy dress, most teams end up pretty sozzled and the bar does pretty well during the tournament. This year saw 38 teams of 3 plus spectators, supporters, family and friends. We counted 240 people at about 11 am.

We had to be set up and playing by 9 am, because the tournament was to kick off at 10 am and a lot of announcements etc had to be made to get some orderliness out of the rabble. We played music throughout the tournament, which consisted of two halves. The competition was over by 1 pm and the fires were lit and everyone partook of a braai. By this time several folk were well oiled already.

After lunch, prizes were awarded and formalities were concluded and then it was party time! The volume was thrust upwards and the crowds seated on the sundeck responded well. By 2.30 or 3 pm we had most people dancing and the booze continued to flow.

We were scheduled to stop at 5 pm, as the Springboks versus England rugby match was screened. Although most people crowded into the clubhouse to watch the rugby, there were a few diehards who stuck around. The tone of the party changed somewhat and we played heavier music like Pink Floyd etc. Eventually at almost 7 pm, it was dark and cold enough outside to be able to take the gap and pack up.

A truly great day was had by all and some serious funds were raised. I think by the time we left, the pub was pretty dry!
